Signs of a Bat Infestation in Your Home or Business

Bats roost in concealed spaces and are active at night, which means an infestation can go undetected for months. Texas Bat Laws & Maternity Season Timing

Bats are protected under the Texas Parks and Wildlife Code. Killing or possessing them is generally prohibited, and using chemicals to kill bats is a federal violation. Removing bats from an occupied building is permitted, but the method and timing both matter.

Exclusion work must be completed outside of bat maternity season, which in Texas generally runs from May through August. During this window, young bats can’t fly and can’t safely exit through one-way devices. Conducting exclusion during maternity season risks trapping pups inside the structure, creating odor problems, increasing health risks, and exposing the property owner to legal liability. Health Risks Associated with Bat Infestations

A bat roost isn’t only a structural problem. Guano can harbor Histoplasma capsulatum, a fungus whose airborne spores cause histoplasmosis, a respiratory illness ranging from mild to serious depending on exposure and individual health. Guano and urine can also saturate insulation and structural materials, degrading indoor air quality over time if the contamination isn’t properly addressed.
