Types of wasps commonly found in the San Antonio area:
Mud Dauber Wasps
Adult mud dauber wasps are 3/4 to 1 inch long, varying in color by species from dull black to black with bright yellow markings to iridescent blue-black. The best identifying feature is the longer, narrow “waist.” These wasps can become quite problematic to your home or business.
Cicada Killer Wasps
These wasps have a rusty red-colored head and thorax, but are overall black or rusty in color, with yellow band markings on the abdominal segments. They have russet-colored wings.
This type of wasp is back with yellow markings on the abdomen and thorax, with a narrow “waist” and wings folded in half. They’re known for constructing homes that look like small clay pots attached to trees, branches, roofs of garages and other sun-protected areas.
