Bee getting pollin from a white flower
|

Mid-March to the beginning of July is considered the swarming season in the United States. During this time, honey bees begin to reproduce and make a new colony around properties. At this point, the hive population is abundant in San Antonio. Consequently, the beehive is overcrowded, encouraging them to split into separate colonies.

Bees get attracted to properties that smell like honey. If your San Antonio property has been infested with beehives before, or if they weren’t removed properly, your property can act as a breeding ground for bees. The risk of infestation is even more if your house is located in a preferred climatic condition or has a good food source nearby.

It’s normal when you spot a bee flying around the house. If you see bees inside of your home too often, they may have found a way to get into your property. They can enter any structure or object having a hole an inch or larger. Whether it’s a chimney, kitchen, bathroom, laundry room vents, attics, or gutters, these unwanted creatures can invade any area of your property.

Before bees make your property their house, you must take preventive measures. Here are some tips to remove these pests from your San Antonio property

1.  Don’t plant flowers that attract bees

Bees are usually attracted to poppies, honeysuckles, clovers, oregano, and thyme plants. They are bright and smell good. Make sure you don’t plant these flowers in your garden, especially in the swarming season.

2.  Prevent yard nesting

Yard nesting seems to be an exciting idea for you. But, it can create problems for you. These nests may create a perfect spot for bees to invade. To prevent such risks, cover your grills and properly seal your tree houses and sheds.

3.  Avoid wasps

Most people confuse bees with wasps. They look like yellow and black creatures that buzz around your trashcan or outdoor gathering. Avoid wasps as well. Seal foods and throw trash away into a sealed container to prevent the risk of infestation of these creatures.

4.  Try home remedies

Some natural repellents work best in eliminating bees from your property. Instead of harmful sprays, you can make your natural repellent by using these homemade ingredients to prevent bee infestation:

  • Peppermint plants
  • Cucumber peels
  • Potted marigolds
  • Cinnamon
  • Organic baby powder
  • Crushed garlic
  • Vanilla mixed with baby oil

5.  Remove the honeycomb

If you previously had issues with honey bees, remove the honeycomb. The pheromone scents left on the honeycomb can attract new honey bees.

In Texas, killing bees in the wild is a crime. But, if they are nesting inside a wall or outdoors of your property, they will be considered pests and can be exterminated.
